Is NordPass safe?

Yes, NordPass is a secure password manager. It uses the latest XChaCha20 encryption technology and two-factor authentication to ensure your passwords remain safe. Additionally, NordPass employs a zero-knowledge architecture, which means that no one, not even the NordPass team, can see the passwords you store in the app.

Here’s a more thorough look at how NordPass ensures your password and data security, without impacting the user experience:

  • Encryption. NordPass employs the modern XChaCha20 encryption algorithm that is also used by other well-known companies, like Google. Plus, it has a zero-knowledge architecture meaning that the only person who can access your data is you.

  • Independent audit. Just recently, NordPass has successfully undergone an independent SOC 2 Type 1 audit on June 21, 2022. The auditing process examined five main criterias: security, availability, process integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.

  • Multi-factor authentication. This password manager supports multi-factor authentication (MFA). In fact, using MFA is mandatory so this feature is available for both free and premium users of the platform. You can use U2F security keys, an OTP generator, a Bluetooth device, a USB stick, and others. You can also set up fingerprint or face ID authentication on supported devices.

  • Automatic back-ups. With NordPass, your most private details are secure even if you lose your phone or computer. First, it encrypts the data so that no one could access it, and then uploads it to the cloud.

NordPass Features

NordPass has all the main features you’d expect from a password manager. Of course, it includes the classics of any password manager: a password generator, autofill, password import and export options, as well as seamless syncing across all your devices (made possible by cloud storage). Some more advanced features include passkeys, data breach monitoring, and the option to store not only passwords but also other types of information such as credit card info, files, and notes.

Here’s what NordPass offers:

Password generatorGenerates passwords. You can also choose how long you want your password to be, as well as whether you want it to include numbers, symbols, and uppercase and lowercase letters.Password health checkerScans all the passwords that you’ve saved for weak spots in your security. Then the results are grouped into weak, reused, and old passwords.Data breach scanner, real-time breach monitoring.Checks whether your passwords, banking details, and other info were leaked, and provides recommendations for further steps to take if a leak occurred. Also monitors for leaks in real time.PasskeysAn alternative to usual passwords. You can use passkeys as login credentials on sites that support this feature. It’s available on the NordPass desktop app, web vault, Firefox and Chrome-based browser extensions, and Apple mobile devices running iOS 17. The feature is expected on Android devices in the coming months as soon as Google releases an OS update.Secure sharingAllows you to securely share logins via email with limited or full access rights. There’s also a free tool with end-to-end encryption to safely share information, like passwords, passport details, or secret messages with anyone, with no email and NordPass account required.Credit card info storageTo add a bank card, you can either do it manually by filling out all the necessary fields. Or you can use OCR scanning and import all the needed information by scanning the card.Live text scanningYou can make a scan of information on anything – from written documents to images and credit cards. So you can save important data without having to type it in.Web vaultA web vault allows NordPass users to access all of their info on any browser, anywhere – without having to download additional software. It's an excellent option when using someone else's device.Emergency accessAllows you to give your closest contacts read-only access to your passwords.NordPass AuthenticatorA feature for Business plans, to set up 2FA for your credentials on the mobile NordPass app without downloading an extra authenticator appSecure notesYou can store any type of information with notes – birthdays or door codes. No one but you will be able to access them.File AttachmentsAllows Premium users to attach up to 50 files to any item stored in NordPass – whether it's a password, passkey, credit card, or note. In total, NordPass users get 3GB of storage.

Overall, we found NordPass to be feature-rich but lightweight at the same time. The number of features might seem overwhelming when in a list, but the truth is that you don’t really notice the abundance once you’re using the app – they are integrated quite seamlessly into the whole user experience.

For example, tools such as password generator, data breach scanner, and health checker are visible and accessible via the tool tab, but all the different storage options (passwords, credit cards, notes, attachments) feel intuitive to use. And such features as emergency access are barely noticeable (which is a good thing!), and only truly come into view once there is an emergency.

In terms of how well these features function, we have to say that we had no issues with any of them. The autosaving and auto-filling are seamless. It’s super easy to add and delete any type of item, or change and generate passwords with just a few clicks.

Nevertheless, there are a few features that we want to highlight. They might not be unique to NordPass, but their implementation and inner workings deserve some more attention. Thus, below are more detailed descriptions of NordPass features such as password generator, data breach scanner, passkeys, and more:

Password generator

If you struggle to come up with secure passwords, NordPass will do it for you. The NordPass online password generator is really useful as it lets you choose how long you want your password to be, as well as whether you want it to include numbers, symbols, and uppercase and lowercase letters.

With NordPass password generator, you can also choose words mode, which generates not only a random string of symbols. It creates password phrases that would be easier to memorize, so it wouldn’t be impossible even without the password manager if you remember it.

Password health checker

This is a NordPass premium subscription feature that informs you about the state of your passwords. This tool scans all the passwords that you’ve saved for weak spots in your security. Then the results are grouped into weak, reused, and old passwords.

This is what each of them means:

  • Weak passwords – the passwords in this category are not long enough and don’t contain enough different combinations of numbers, capital and lowercase letters, and symbols.

  • Reused passwords – this tab shows the passwords that you’ve repeated for different accounts. And reusing the same password multiple times raises the chances of losing more of your data in case of a hack.

  • Old passwords – here you’ll see any password that hasn’t been changed for more than 90 days.

Passwords falling under any of these categories are considered weak and a point of vulnerability in your security. Therefore, you should check this tab regularly to keep up with your data safety.

Data Breach Scanner

NordPass has an in-built feature to check whether your passwords or other sensitive information have ever been leaked available with Premium plans. It’s called a Data Breach Scanner and it automatically compares items saved in your vault with information found on leaked databases.

The scannings are not limited to your account credentials, but banking information as well. For instance, the scanner checks for leaked credit card data that matches your last name and final four digits. So that you can avoid unauthorized logins to your account and heavy financial losses.

Additionally, NordPass Data Breach Scanner provides you with information on what type of data was compromised as well as where and when the leak occurred. Based on these findings, you will get recommendations on how to secure affected accounts.

However, it’s important to mention that you must manually enable the instant scanning process on the desktop or mobile device. Luckily, NordPass is about to update this feature to continuously monitor leaked databases without the need for manual intervention.

Passkeys

NordPass has launched the option to store, create, and use passkeys as an alternative to usual passwords. You can use passkeys as login credentials on sites that support this feature. It’s available on the NordPass desktop app, web vault, Firefox, and Chrome-based browser extensions, and Apple mobile devices running the latest iOS 17 version. Meanwhile, Android users will likely receive an OS update in the coming months that will add passkey support. Crucially, the feature is available to individual and business plan users.

Passkeys, in essence, work pretty efficiently. When a user joins a website that supports passkeys, two versions of passkeys are created – public and private. The private passkey is saved on your device, and the public one is on the website’s servers.

For passkeys to work, you must have public and private passkeys. So using this method of logging in to your account is much safer. If the website’s servers are hacked, the criminals will have no use of the passkeys saved there because those passkeys cannot be used without the private version saved on your device.

Sharing login details

Whether you share an online subscription with your partner or you need to give your work colleague access to a shared account, there are bound to be times when you’ll need to give a password to a trusted contact.

And when you do, the NordPass Premium account not only makes it simple but also really secure. You can select whichever password you want to share, type in the recipient’s email address and it’ll encrypt the password before sending it so that no one but that person will be able to use it.

When you share your password via NordPass, you can pick whether you’ll provide the recipient with limited or full access. This means that if you provide full access, then the recipient can edit the data you’ve shared with them.

On the other hand, the limited option will only allow the recipient to use the provided data and make no changes to it. So be careful with how much control over your passwords, credit card information, or secure notes you give with this sharing feature.

Secure data sharing solution

With NordPass you can share not only your passwords with the closest circle of people but also other important data securely. This password manager tool has developed a free tool with end-to-end encryption to safely share information, like passwords, passport details, or secret messages between anyone.

In the app’s message box, you’ll be able to type in any of the information you wish to send out, generate a shareable link to the message, and then send the link to the message receiver. The link expiration time is 24 hours, or right after the recipient reads the message.

The content in the message is encrypted, so only the sender and the recipient are aware of what content was shared. So, your information stays secure and safe from cyber threats.

Emergency Access

For Premium users, NordPass offers Emergency Access. It's a feature that gives your closest contacts read-only access to your passwords. Should something happen to you, your personal data will still be accessible.

Emergency Access can also be a useful feature in case you forget or lose your Master Password – think of it as a last resort access solution. While not major, it's still an important addition to a solid NordPass package.

NordPass has three plans and each of them includes a different number of features. Even though all options are great, every single one of them caters to users with different needs.

Putting all things together, the NordPass Free version is actually pretty good, as long as you only require it to keep your passwords in one location. But if you seek higher security and a way to share your passwords safely, then the Premium plan is where it’s at.

And for your security – all paid NordPass plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try out the premium features for yourself before committing fully to a free or paid plan.

To see which plan option is the most worthy of your attention, we’ll provide you with a quick breakdown to help you select the best one for your needs.

NordPass free plan

The Free plan is an excellent option if you require only the basics that a password manager can offer for you. This option covers 1 user account and offers these features:

  • Unlimited passwords

  • Autosave and autofill

  • Password import and export

  • Safe notes

  • Credit card information storage

  • Personal information forms

  • Password generator

  • Auto sync

  • Multi-factor authentication

While the NordPass free version is all well if you’re not looking for a very advanced tool, some other password managers offer more extensive free plans. For example, RoboForm’s free subscription tier, among the same features above, also includes emergency access, secure sharing, and a password health checker. On the other hand, NordPass's free plan also includes a multi-factor authenticator and 24/7 live chat support, which RoboForm offers only with Premium. So with both providers, you win some and you lose some.

NordPass Premium plan

The Premium plan of NordPass comes for $1.24/month and includes everything that the Free plan does and some more:

  • Password and other data sharing

  • File attachments (up to 3GB of storage)

  • Emergency access

  • Data breach scanner with real-time protection

  • Password health checker

In our experience with NordPass, the Premium plan is definitely worth the price. All of the features make it a full-fledged password security tool that is super convenient for all kinds of purposes. The data breach scanner proved to be useful a couple of times – it warned us in time about some compromised accounts. The password health checker is also a nice touch, as it makes it easy to update old passwords.

Compared to other providers’ Premium plans, such as 1Password, NordPass does not offer anything out of the ordinary, but neither does 1Password. This is a pretty standard Premium version, although 1Password is a little bit more expensive.

NordPass Family plan

The Family plan has the same essential features as the Premium, and the only difference is in how many people can be added to the same subscription. The premium offers 1 user account, while the Family plan offers 6 and costs $2.68/month.

The owner of the plan can also manage the other accounts – add or remove them from the family plan. Other than that, each user gets their own separate account with all the Premium plan features.

Compared to the family plan of 1Password, both password managers are pretty much the same in terms of features. However, NordPass allows 6 guest user accounts whereas 1Password allows only 5, but at the same time, 1Password gives more user management opportunities, such as shared vault creation and permission management.

NordPass for Business

Nordpass offers plans for businesses starting from $3.59/month, and there are some significant differences between Premium and Family plans. You can self-checkout a plan for up to 250 employees, and if you need more, you’ll have to schedule a call with NordPass.

Firstly, there is an admin panel for overseeing and managing all business plan user accounts. Each individual in your organization gets a separate account, although the administrator of the plan can manage permissions, add and remove users, as well as track their activity logs.

Additionally, the password manager storage is exclusively cloud-based, which means that any company-wide updates automatically sync between all employees’ accounts.

NordPass for Business is a great solution that grants autonomy to employees – they can save passwords on their personal accounts and still easily share them with their teammates or the whole organization.

Is NordPass included with NordVPN?

There’s a way to get NordPass together with NordVPN now, and it comes for a pretty great deal. If you choose to buy a NordVPN Plus Plan bundle, then NordPass is included in the purchase. And you’ll get it with all the Premium plan features, like a data breach scanner, item sharing, and identification for old, reused, or weak passwords.

NordPass apps: ease of use and installation

Of course, the most important thing before selecting a password manager is to make sure it works on your mobile or desktop device.

Luckily, you can get the NordPass app on all major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux. Additionally, there’s an option to install the NordPass extension on popular browsers, such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, Edge, and Brave.

So how does NordPass work on desktop, mobile devices, and browsers? Below, you will find our thorough review.

NordPass desktop app

When it comes to desktop applications, NordPass offers support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

The functionality of the app you get greatly depends on the subscription plan you purchase. This means that you’ll unlock the app’s full functionality only with the paid subscription plans.

In any case, you won’t have any problems using your application, as the software is really intuitive. You won’t get overwhelmed by the amount of features because everything is neatly put under corresponding tabs:

  • Categories. This section allows you to view all your items or find particular ones based on their category, such as passwords, secure notes, credit cards, and others.

  • Folders. In this tab you can individually create folders and later, access them quickly.

  • Tools. Here you can find a Password Generator, Password Health feature, a Data Breach Scanner, and Emergency Access.

Such categorization made it easy for us to find all necessary items and information in no time at all. The search bar at the top is also neat, as it removes the need to scroll through a seemingly endless list of items. And if you’re not sure if you have a password for a particular app or site at all, just search it up and it will either show up or not.

However, as most desktop devices aren’t able to support biometric authentication methods, you’ll need to use your master password to complete your NordPass login.

Also, it’s important to mention that Emergency Access is not available on macOS.

NordPass mobile apps

The NordPass mobile app is the same on Android and iOS, both in the sense of design and user experience. For us, the NordPass app for mobiles was simple, intuitive, and easy to use and navigate. We liked that everything on the apps is easily accessible from a simple menu at the bottom of the screen:

  • Home. This is the main tab where you can see all your saved passwords and add new ones. Also, it includes a search bar to find a particular password quicker.

  • Browse. This section categorizes saved items for easier access. You can browse through passwords, secure notes, credit cards, personal information, folders, shared and deleted items.

  • Tools. Here you can find all NordPass useful features, including a Password Generator, Password Health, and a Data Breach Scanner.

  • Menu. This is the tab where you can access settings, help center, and also switch accounts or lock the NordPass app.

Both Android and iOS are fully featured, including the credit card scanner, the option to add folders, share items, and secure sensitive documents.

NordPass web vault

NordPass web vault is a convenient solution for people who don’t like apps. It is a web-based NordPass application that you can log in to from any device and any browser. You don’t need to download and install the NordPass app on a device at all. Having a web vault is beneficial when you’re using devices that are not your own, such as a library PC or your friend’s phone in case of emergency.

The NordPass web vault has the same interface and all the features of a regular desktop and mobile app. You can easily access all your passwords and other items, change your account details, and use the password generator, health checker, and data breach scanner.

We encountered absolutely no roadblocks when using the web vault. Since the design is the same across all NordPass apps – web-based or not – there were no navigation issues either. Logging in is as easy as ever – all you need is your Nord Account details and your master password.

NordPass extension for browsers

You can get the NordPass extension for the most popular browsers like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Brave.

The extensions offer the same functionality as desktop applications. So, for example, if you use Google Chrome and install the NordPass Chrome extension, it will make it really convenient to autofill passwords while browsing. When we tested the extension, the autofill function worked perfectly well, and saving new or updated passwords was easy.

However, one thing that we thought was inconvenient with the NordPass browser plugin is that you can’t use tools or edit information directly through the extension. If you want to use a password generator or any other tool, you will be prompted to open the desktop application. Besides, you can’t log in into the browser extension without a desktop application either.

NordPass customer support

OptionAvailability24/7 live chat✅Email support✅Knowledge base✅How-to guides✅Phone support❌

NordPass has an extensive selection of support channels, which include FAQs, set-up guides, and a general knowledge base. If your question is related to anything regarding NordPass apps or your account, you can be sure to find your answers there. The help center is easy to navigate and search, and the how-to guides include helpful pictures and tips.

Nevertheless, if you would rather speak to a real person, there’s also the option to get help via email or 24/7 live chat. We tested both of these options. The support came back to us in just a few hours via email, and the live chat connected us with an agent in just seconds. Our issues were resolved professionally and quickly – NordPass customer support is really one of the best.
